High School students in Indiana have electives built into their academic plans. That means in addition to the required courses in mathematics, science, social studies and language arts you must take to graduate, you may choose additional classes from a variety of areas including the arts, computers or a career area.
How will you choose an elective from all the possibilities?
Here are some quick do’s and don’ts:
DO prepare a “Four-year High School Course Plan” and record it in your Indiana Guidance Portfolio. Use this plan to make sure you have all of the courses you need for the diploma you desire and the electives you need to prepare for your future.
DON’T sign up for an elective class because your friends have picked it.
DO think about your future career plans. Make a plan to help you explore careers and prepare for the college major that interests you. If you need help selecting electives related to your college major or career area interests, see your school counselor or look at Indiana Career Pathways. This guide recommends Indiana high school courses that you might want to take if you’re interested in various career areas.
DON'T pick an elective because it sounds easy and will allow you to coast to a good grade. That’s a waste of your time.
DO remember that your High School Course Plan is flexible. It’s fine to make changes in the courses you take as you learn more about yourself and the careers you’re considering.
DON’T hesitate to try something you’ve always wanted to do. For example, if you feel there’s an artist, actor or writer hidden inside you, use your high school electives to explore your talents in visual arts, drama or journalism.
DO talk to your parents, teachers, and school counselor about which courses they recommend for you.
