You're lucky enough to get a job offer. How do you know whether or not to accept?
If you're desperate, of course, you'll probably take the job, even if it's not exactly what you'd hoped for. After all, you have to start somewhere, right? But if you can be slightly more choosy, think about the following before jumping on the first offer:
Salary and Benefits
Do your homework. Check out relevant salary information. Finally, do your own math. How much wiill it cost you to live--food, rent, clothing, gas, insurance and spending money--and can you make it on what you're being offered?
Make a list of benefits that are non-negotiable (such as health insurance) and those that are desirable (such as two weeks of vacation or flextime). If you'd been extended a job offer, ask politely whether there is room for negotiation.
Get It In Writing
There's nothing wrong with asking for the job description, salary and benefits in writing, especially if you have negotiated a deal that differs from the orginial offer.
Want To Think About It?
If you really need time to think about the offer, explain that you'd like a day or two. But this is one instance in which playing hard to get could backfire. Take more than 48 hours to respond and you'll look indecisive or unmotivated--two qualities you definitely do not want to project.
